Reticulated giraffe
Laikipia is one of the best places in Kenya to see the reticulated giraffe, with its bold net patterned coat, moving slowly through the long grass. Our guests met them on game drives across the plains.

OlMarai
Laikipia is where OlMarai began. It is a highland plateau northwest of Mount Kenya, a land of open plains, great rocks and skies that seem to go on forever. Our first camp was hosted on Shoulmai Conservancy, a community conservancy, and from the very first day the people of the land walked with us.
The community helped us choose every site, cleared the ground for our tents, supplied our water, kept watch through the night and guided our guests. They welcomed us with song and dance, and their elders gathered with us around the fire to share the stories of this land.
Days began on game drives, with reticulated giraffe and zebra grazing in the long grass. Afternoons were for climbing the great rocks and watching the light change over the valleys. Every two nights the camp moved to a new site, so each morning brought a new view, and every evening ended by the fire under the night sky.
Laikipia is home to the Yaaku, a small community living around the Mukogodo Forest. Their language, Yaakunte, is one of the most endangered in Kenya. Over the generations the community came to speak the language of their neighbours, and their own words slowly fell silent.
Today only three people still speak pure Yaaku. One teacher has refused to let it disappear. With a Yaaku dictionary in hand, the teacher sits with the children and teaches them their language word by word, so that it can be spoken again in the homes it came from.
Every word a child learns is a word saved. It is one of the most moving stories we found in Laikipia, and a reminder of why we travel with care and walk beside the communities who host us.
